Post-Renovation Cleaning

Fine dust travels further than most people expect. It rides the air through open doorways and the heating and cooling vents, so a basement project can leave a film on a bedroom dresser two floors up. The places it gathers are predictable: the tops of door frames and window casings, baseboards and trim, vent covers and switch plates, light fixtures, cabinet fronts and the shelves behind them, and the window sills and the tracks under the glass.

Your cleaner works through those spots from high to low, so dust brushed off a door frame is picked up on the floor pass instead of settling again. Window tracks and the inside of cabinets are extras: add them as you book if the work happened close to them.

New kitchens and bathrooms have the most new surfaces to finish: cabinet doors and handles, countertops and the backsplash, the sink and faucet, the tub, shower, toilet and vanity, mirrors and tile. Your cleaner wipes the dust from each one, lifts paint flecks and the residue that labels and protective tape leave on new fixtures and glass, and shines the faucets and hardware.

If the new cabinets are still empty, add the inside of the cabinets before you book, so the shelves are ready for your dishes. The inside of a new oven or fridge can be added too. Did your installer recommend a particular cleaner for a stone counter or a specialty finish? Leave it out with a note and your cleaner will use it.

Sanding and refinishing floors makes the finest dust of all, and it comes to rest on the baseboards and trim of every room. Painting leaves drips and flecks on floors, sills and hardware. Your cleaner dusts the baseboards, trim and sills, lifts the flecks from hard surfaces, and vacuums and mops with products suited to the new floor.

Finished a basement? Add the finished basement extra when you book, so the new level is cleaned along with the rest of the home. Hand-wiped baseboards are an extra too, for trim that needs more than a dusting.

A condo renovation comes with the building’s rules: elevator bookings, concierge sign-in and the times trades may work. Add the details that apply to your booking notes and choose your time around your move-in date, so the suite is clean before the boxes and furniture arrive. In a suite, the dust has fewer places to go: it gathers on the window sills, in the kitchen and bathroom and along the baseboards, and your cleaner works through them room by room. Dust can keep drifting out of the vents for a few weeks after that, so it’s worth planning a follow-up visit; from there, regular cleaning keeps the new rooms looking the way you pictured them.
